Writing papers for a class or for submission to a journal can mean putting in a lot of research and sweating out the content. But you’ve also go to worry about the formatting of your paper (or thesis or dissertation), and especially the formatting of your bibliography.

These days, almost all student writers are required to produce their papers (including theses and dissertations) in one of the three major styles: APA, MLA, or Chicago/Turabian, or a variation thereof, such as ASA. Learn about different writing styles.

Each writing style specifies “how-to” information in several major categories:

  • Language usage
  • Bibliography entry formatting
  • Citation of sources
  • Appearance of text, headings, and title pages
  • Page layout: margins, numbering, and running heads

Most students are competent enough with their word processing software to handle page layout for term papers, but when it comes to multi-chapter documents like theses and dissertations, and their complex page numbering and section ordering requirements, most are overwhelmed. And when it comes to formatting bibliographies and citing sources, almost all students decide that buying software is a lot easier than wading through dozens (or hundreds) of pages of a style guide to determine exactly how to cite a certain source.

We at Writing Resources have investigated software products that are marketed to students and have employed student testers to evaluate these products. We invite you to read our findings. Find out about software you can buy to help you with writing term papers, theses, and dissertations.
